Jakarta, Indonesia and couple shower in Lawrence, Kansas.
The wedding is divided into 5 ceremonies, which listed below in orderly
fashion
Siraman and Langkahan (December 28th, 2001)
Siraman. In this ceremony, the parents and other people honored by the
family give the bride and the groom a symbolic bath.
Langkahan is performed when the groom or the bride has
elder brother or sister that hasn't been married. In this occasion, the groom
has to perform this ceremony since he has elder brother who hasn't been married.
Midodareni (December 28th, 2001)
Midodareni is the symbol of the bride's last night as a
virgin. This ceremony is performed in the bride's house the night before the
wedding. In this ceremony, the groom with the groom's family will visit the bride's
house, and the groom's family will introduce the groom to the bride's family. The
bride and the groom are not allowed not see each other during this ceremony.
Church Blessing (December 29th, 2001)
This is the first time the groom and the bride can meet
after being isolated with each other for about a week. The groom pick up the
bride early in the morning and they go to the church together.
Before the ceremony started, they need to sign marriage
petition in front of their parents, the minister, and three witnesses; one was
representing the state, and the other two were appointed by the groom's and the
bride's family.
During the ceremony, the groom and the bride have to show
their respect to their parents by grovel on their parents' feet. This also
starting a new period where the groom and the bride will call each other parents
in laws as mother and father.
Panggih (December 29th, 2001)
This ceremony was performed right after the church. This is the meeting of
the newlywed and their families after they legally became husband and wife. In
this ceremony they celebrate the wedding by inviting some close friends and
relatives.
